Multi-part standard defining a common modelling methodology, repository and message scheme for financial industry messaging; Part 1 (metamodel) third edition published 2026
ISO 20022 is a multi-part International Standard titled Financial services — Universal financial industry message scheme. Rather than defining a fixed set of messages, it defines a methodology, a modelling metamodel and a central repository from which message definitions are derived. The series is maintained by ISO/TC 68/SC 9. ISO 20022-1 (the metamodel) reached its third edition in April 2026, replacing ISO 20022-1:2013, and the other parts of the series were revised in the same cycle.
The parts cover the metamodel (Part 1), the UML profile (Part 2), modelling (Part 3), XML schema generation (Part 4), reverse engineering (Part 5), message transport characteristics (Part 6), registration (Part 7) and ASN.1 generation (Part 8), with further work in progress. Together they explain how business processes and concepts are modelled, how those models are turned into syntax-specific message definitions, and how new definitions are proposed, reviewed and registered.
The architecture separates three layers. The business model describes business processes, actors and concepts independently of any message. The logical message model derives message definitions from that business model. The syntax layer renders those definitions in a physical syntax — most commonly XML, with ASN.1 also supported. This separation is why ISO 20022 messages can evolve without discarding the underlying business semantics.
All approved content lives in the ISO 20022 Message Definition Repository (MDR), published on iso20022.org. Governance runs through the ISO 20022 Registration Authority (SWIFT), the Registration Management Group and the Standards Evaluation Groups, using a public business justification process for new or changed message sets. Message identifiers follow a fixed pattern of business area, message identifier, variant and version — for example a payments clearing and settlement message of the form pacs.008.001.xx.
ISO 20022 now underpins a large share of the world's payment and securities infrastructure. High-value payment systems have migrated to it, including the Eurosystem's T2, the Bank of England's CHAPS and the US Fedwire Funds Service, and the coexistence period for cross-border payment messaging on the Swift network ended in November 2025. The standard's richer, structured data — particularly for parties, addresses, remittance information and purpose codes — is the practical driver behind these migrations, since it improves sanctions screening, reconciliation and straight-through processing.
ISO 20022 is a technical standard, not a management system standard: there is no organizational certification against it. Conformance is demonstrated through correct implementation, message validation against published schemas, and the testing and accreditation programmes run by individual market infrastructures and networks.
Related standards in the financial messaging space include ISO 9362 (BIC — business identifier codes), ISO 13616 (IBAN), ISO 4217 (currency codes) and ISO 17442 (Legal Entity Identifier), all of which are used as building blocks inside ISO 20022 message definitions.
