Overview

The world's most widely used environmental management system standard, revised in 2026. ISO 14001:2026 is the fourth edition; it replaces ISO 14001:2015, which is withdrawn, and certified organizations must transition within the period set for the revision.

It replaces ISO 14001:2015, which is now withdrawn. The revision keeps the proven framework of the standard intact while restructuring it for clearer navigation and aligning it more closely with current environmental priorities.

The standard specifies requirements for an environmental management system (EMS) that an organization uses to manage its environmental responsibilities in a systematic way. Like all ISO management system standards it uses the harmonized structure, so its requirements sit in clauses covering the organization's context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement, and it integrates readily with ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001.

Core mechanics carried through from earlier editions remain the heart of the system: determining environmental aspects and impacts across activities, products and services and deciding which are significant; identifying compliance obligations — legal requirements and other requirements the organization subscribes to — and evaluating compliance with them; setting environmental objectives and planning how to achieve them; controlling operations, including a life cycle perspective that extends attention beyond the site fence; and preparing for and responding to emergency situations.

The 2026 revision strengthens several themes. There is greater emphasis on leadership and governance and on managing environmental impacts in an integrated way across operations and value chains rather than site by site. The standard takes a broader view of environmental conditions — climate, ecosystems and biodiversity, pollution, and resource availability — and of how those conditions affect the organization as well as how the organization affects them. Navigation and structure have been reworked so that requirements are easier to locate and apply.

Certification is available through accredited certification bodies. The normal route is a two-stage initial assessment — a Stage 1 review of readiness, scope, aspects and impacts, compliance obligations and internal audit evidence, followed by a Stage 2 assessment of implementation and effectiveness — with surveillance audits during the certificate cycle and a recertification audit at the end. Certification is not compulsory: organizations can implement the standard and self-declare, or use it to satisfy customer and tender requirements without a certificate.

Organizations holding ISO 14001:2015 certificates must transition to the 2026 edition. ISO has indicated that certified organizations transition within the timeframe set by their certification cycle, commonly around three years from publication; the International Accreditation Forum and national accreditation bodies confirm the detailed arrangements. A practical transition starts with a gap analysis against the restructured text, then updates to the context and interested-party analysis, aspects and impacts register, compliance obligations, objectives and internal audit programme.
